MPs set for June 3 comedy show
Henry Mhara Sports Reporter Ignore their threats to clad themselves in overalls and walk to Parliament. Never mind their shocking proposal to have women go bald headed to reduce HIV and Aids. Disregard their banging of desks, jeering and singing in Parliament, there is another side to “comical” MPs. Our honourable MPs have become the talk of town for their “alien” contributions to debates in Parliament, starting from Simbaneuta Mudarikwa, who advocated for the legalisation of mbanje, Morgan Femai suggesting women should have their heads clean shaved as a preventive measure to curb Aids. Can you imagine Patrick Zhuwao telling a fellow MP that his suit was designed from a sofa-manufacturing material? The MPs surely have to take a breather from this “comedy”. On June 3, MPs, senators and the captains of industry will play curtain raisers to a Group G World Cup qualifier between the Warriors and Guinea. Zifa chief executive Jonathan Mashingaidze yesterday confirmed the blockbuster clash. “We have made all necessary arrangements and it will definitely take place. We have put our request through the clerk of Parliament Austin Zvoma and Jeffreyson Chitando is co-ordinating the MPs. Desmund Ali is co-ordinating the captains of industry. There was a similar match before. In 1981 government ministers played soccer legends at Rufaro Stadium and I vividly remember Vice President Joshua Nkomo walking into the stadium wearing his big tracksuit. It was an exciting experience for supporters and we want to recreate such interactions between fans, MPs and the corporate world,” said Mashingaidze. Just like the Warriors coach Rahman Gumbo, who has already named his squad for the Guinea match, lawmakers are also not wasting time. Chitando, on behalf of coach Femai, yesterday released a 13-member squad for the match. Now imagine this: Festus Dumbu (Zaka West) manning the goalposts, Trevor Saruwaka (Mutasa Central), Marvellous Kumalo (St Mary’s), Simbaneuta Mudarikwa (Uzumba) and Lovemore Mpukuta (Gokwe Mapfungautsi) forming the line of defence; Chief Fortune Charumbira (Chief President), Chief Enos Musarurwa (Mashonaland West), Douglas “Copac” Mwonzora (Nyanga North) and Obert Gutu (Chisipite) lining up in midfield. Kudakwashe Bhasikiti (Mwenezi East) and Femai (Chikomo) will be leading the attack. “The aim is to bring Parliament to the people,” said Chitando. “Chief Charumbira has demanded to play in the match and he wants a midfield position. We have an experienced squad with most of our players having played in the Premier League before. “You remember Chief Musarurwa used to play for Chapungu and these are some of the players who are eager to charm Rahman Gumbo for a place in the national team. We will have our training sessions every Monday and Wednesday until the match day,” added Chitando. Maybe Jonathan Moyo could have been the captain of this team with Thabitha Khumalo the deputy!
